Raising the Roof

Homeward Trust is a proud partner of Raising the Roof, a national campaign running from November through February that raises funds to support ending youth homelessness. Throughout the campaign, partners sell toques as a fundraiser, culminating in ‘Toque Tuesday’ (Tuesday, February 1, 2022). All Edmontonians are encouraged to wear a Raising the Roof toque in support of ending youth homelessness.

This year you can buy a toque, hat or mask at Find Edmonton, both in store and online, starting on Friday, January 28, and will be available throughout the month of February. Proceeds go to support local youth and family initiatives.

This year’s campaign charity of choice is CHEW, the Community Health Empowerment and Wellness Project. Their new space, Outpost, is specifically for LGBTQ2S+ youth who are at risk and facing homelessness. Due to the high risk of transphobia and homophobia at local shelters, this new space provides a refuge for youth during the winter season and is a place where youth can have access to showers, laundry, food and health supports.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We recognize we are gathered, in collaboration and with joint purpose, on Treaty 6 territory. This territory is the home and gathering place for diverse Indigenous peoples. The Cree, Blackfoot, Métis, Nakota Sioux, Iroquois, Dene, Inuit, and many others. We know the importance of the Treaty and our responsibility to these communities and that only in partnership can we create the social change necessary to end homelessness. It is vital that we meaningfully engage and partner with Indigenous people and communities in this work. It is important to recognize and address the conditions brought forth by colonialism. Displacement from traditional homelands, systemic racism, residential schools, the Sixties Scoop, and the ongoing overrepresentation of Indigenous people in child welfare, correctional systems, and homelessness are responsibilities we all share.
