What does it Take to Furnish 80 Homes a Month? A Community!

Over the past year, approximately 80 households per month have been furnished through the Housing First program in Edmonton.

Signing a lease and moving out of homelessness can be a life-changing moment for people – but it takes more than four walls to make a lasting home.  Eighty households per month means a lot of furniture, and that’s where Find comes in.

Find Edmonton provides gently-used furniture at no cost to participants moving out of homelessness through the Housing First program. Clients have the opportunity to tour the Find South location with a Housing First worker and choose items that will help them successfully set up their new homes and help them on their journey out of homelessness.

Being able to provide this experience to our clients is incredibly important and we cannot do it without the support of our community. All donations that come to Find benefit those experiencing homelessness in our city.

On August 18, 2018 Find South Retail + Donation Centre brought the community together and hosted its annual donation drive and community barbeque. We collected over four truckloads of donated furniture and had hundreds of treasures go out the door. Individuals and families came and enjoyed food, face painting, cotton candy, games, and prizes, all in support of a great cause.

With the amazing support of the community, we are able to help many families and individuals through the Housing First program to get them started in their new homes with furniture and household goods.

We would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to all of those who came out, shopped, donated, and supported our work to help our most vulnerable neighbors. Thank you for helping us in our journey towards restoring hope, dignity and stability to those who need it most.

If you are interested in donating to Find, we are happy to accept donations year-round at the Find South Retail + Donation Centre during regular business hours or you can schedule a pick up for multiple items by calling the store at 780.988.1717.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We recognize we are gathered, in collaboration and with joint purpose, on Treaty 6 territory. This territory is the home and gathering place for diverse Indigenous peoples. The Cree, Blackfoot, Métis, Nakota Sioux, Iroquois, Dene, Inuit, and many others. We know the importance of the Treaty and our responsibility to these communities and that only in partnership can we create the social change necessary to end homelessness. It is vital that we meaningfully engage and partner with Indigenous people and communities in this work. It is important to recognize and address the conditions brought forth by colonialism. Displacement from traditional homelands, systemic racism, residential schools, the Sixties Scoop, and the ongoing overrepresentation of Indigenous people in child welfare, correctional systems, and homelessness are responsibilities we all share.
